Saints: The Final Countdown
BY KEN BOLD
St Helens is home to one of the most famous Rugby League clubs in the world. Saints have a long and proud history and this book tells the story of each and every one of the 79 finals that they have contested, from the very first Challenge Cup final in 1897 to the present day.
Each two-page spread gives details of the teams and scorers, Saints' route to the final and a description of the match, including an interesting and often quirky fact about each final. Numerous illustrations complement the text.
As well as covering all Challenge Cup finals, Super League Grand finals and Championship finals the book also includes all Premiership Trophy finals, Lancashire Cup finals, Regal Trophy finals and BBC2 Floodlit Trophy finals. Oddities such as the Western Division final and the Club Championship final are also included.
A short statistics and trivia section concludes the book. This book will stir the memories of those who remember watching many of the games and provide an easily accessible and very readable insight into the heritage of the club to those whose interest in Saints has begun more recently. Some readers will wish to read the book from cover to cover whilst for others it will be a fascinating source of reference which may help to settle a few friendly arguments.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ken Bold was born at Cowley Hill Hospital in St Helens in December 1952. His father was a keen Saints supporter and for many years he operated one of the turnstiles at Knowsley Road on match days. From a very early age Ken accompanied his dad to reserve games and attended his initial first team match in February 1960.
He has watched many hundreds of Saints games since then and, hopefully, will continue to watch Saints for many years yet. He played amateur Rugby League for Saints `Youth Section' before representing Leeds University at the sport in the early seventies. He played for a number of local clubs after completing his studies, most notably Saints B team. After he finished playing he spent several years as a referee. He also coached school teams at Sutton Manor and Penketh primary schools.
He now lives in Widnes but regularly makes the short trip to the Totally Wicked Stadium to watch Saints and makes contributions to the `Saints and Proud' matchday programme. This is his first book.
